National Safe Boating Week, put together by the Safe Boating Campaign, takes place every year during the month of May and is an important tool for boating education! Created to help encourage responsible boating, the Safe Boating Campaign focuses heavily on the importance of wearing a life jacket while on board any vessel.

According to Recent U.S. Coast Guard Statistics:

In 2016, 80% of boating fatalities were caused by drowning. Of those incidents, 83% of drowning victims were not wearing a life jacket. The Safe Boating Campaign puts an emphasis on all passengers wearing a life jacket, regardless of their swimming capabilities. Two thirds of drowning victims in 2016 were considered strong swimmers. This statistic is just part of the reason why the Safe Boating Campaign puts a strong emphasis on all passengers wearing a life jacket.

Florida Can Make a Difference

Based on U.S. Coast Guard Statistics, the state of Florida was the leading state for reported boating deaths in 2016. Florida also remained number one for the total number of reported boating accidents in 2016.
