With more people working remotely from their boats these past several months our wifi provider, onSpot wifi, has seen a significant increase in the number of devices connecting to our networks at most onSpot marinas. Many boaters have recently purchased boosters, extenders, routers and other signal boosting devices to ensure they have a strong solid connection to our networks.
onSpot wifi has discovered Netgear, TP-Link, Linksys, D-Link, and other generic WiFi extenders are causing serious connectivity issues on our networks and are critically hampering the WiFi service for you, the boater/user. To make sure the WiFi is performing well for everyone at onSpot marinas, their Engineering Team is presently scouring the marina networks for these WiFi extenders and blocking all offending devices from using onSpot’s WiFi service.
Effective immediately onSpot wifi will no longer allow the use of WiFi extenders on their networks and recommend a Pepwave Surf On The Go Router, a Pepwave Surf SOHO MK3 Router, or a King WiFiMax Router instead. They have tested these devices extensively and fully support their use at all onSpot marinas. Aigean and Wave WiFi products are also supported.
Pepwave Surf SOHO MK3 Router:
To create your own network onboard and for the best WiFi service (especially TV streaming and working onboard), they highly recommend the following wireless router with strong antennas; they can help set it up over the phone (all wireless) and fully support it with monitoring as well to keep it running smoothly for you. This is their top choice – it will bring in 5 GHz (5G) and regular 2.4 GHz WiFi and broadcast on both for older equipment to connect. There is an Amazon link on the webpage at the link below and another vendor also. They have even written a step-by-step PDF guide to download that you will find at the end of the webpage. (Once setup is complete and the router is online, they recommend you upgrade the Surf SOHO to the latest Firmware version. This is not mentioned in the Setup Guide. To upgrade the Firmware go to System (at top) > Firmware (on left) > Check for Firmware (in middle) and follow instructions.
King WiFiMax Router:
Here is another less-expensive router called the King WiFiMax with similar capability. It also will bring in both 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz to the boat and broadcast on both. It has a nice, simple user interface and we can assist with setting it up over the phone. This will also provide a big improvement for WiFi connectivity inside the boat. We will not have the same monitoring and support capability with this router as with the Pepwave above.
