This year’s National Safe Boating Week is the week of May 17-23, 2014. Always held during the first full week before Memorial Day weekend, Safe Boating Week is designed to remind boaters and their families about staying safe on the water.
Stop by Harbortown during Safe Boating Week – When you purchase our ethanol-free gas or diesel during the week of May 17-23, receive a complimentary gas coupon, key chain, koozie, and safe boating literature. (While supplies last, first come first serve.)
Here are a few Boating Safety tips to stay mindful of all year round:
- Be aware of certain Hazards on the Water that might be relevant to the area you are boating in. Research ahead of time to see if there are any submerged objects, tricky currents, inclement weather, etc., that you should be aware of.
- Remember that BUI (boating under the influence) is a serious offense, and can put your life and the lives of others in danger. Alcohol affects judgment, balance, and vision, essential components to boat operation. Never take the wheel after consuming alcohol.
- Choose a life jacket that’s appropriate for your activity, size and age. Here is a handy life jacket checklist provided by SafeBoatingCampaign.com. It’s well-known that in almost three-fourths of all fatal boating accidents, drowning is the cause of death.
