National Safe Boating Week is May 22-28, 2021
National Safe Boating Week is May 22-28, 2021. Harbortown Marina – Canaveral joins boating safety advocates who have teamed up to promote safe and responsible boating, including voluntary, consistent life jacket wear each time boaters are on the water.
“The summer boating season is a great time to make new memories on the water with family and friends,” said Yvonne Pentz, communications director of the National Safe Boating Council, the lead organization for the campaign. “We encourage boaters and paddlers to share their passion for responsible boating by showing the community that wearing a life jacket is rewards, expected and easy – it’s the norm.”
U.S. Coast Guard statistics show that drowning was the reported cause of death in four out of every five recreational boating fatalities in 2019, and that 86 percent of those who drowned were not wearing life jackets. New life jackets are much more comfortable, lightweight and stylish than the bulky orange style most boaters know. There are innovative options, such as inflatable life jackets, allowing mobility and flexibility for activities like boating, fishing, paddling or hunting, and are much cooler in the warmer weather. The National Safe Boating Council encourages all boaters to participate in Wear Your Life Jacket at Work Day on May 21, 2021, the day before National Safe Boating Week. No matter where boaters are safely working, they can join in the fun by wearing their life jacket and posting creative pictures on social media for a chance to win a prize.
This is a great way to encourage others to boat responsibly, including following state and local guidance for boating.
How to Participate
Boaters share a picture of themselves wearing a life jacket at work (or home) on social media along with the hashtag #lifejacketatwork and tag @boatingcampaign (Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram).
Don’t use social media? Email photos to outreach@safeboatingcouncil.org.
Chance to Win a Prize
Winners will be chosen randomly throughout the day to receive boating swag from the Safe Boating Campaign, such as t-shirts, dry bags, first aid kits, stickers, and more.
